Maggie Norton has studied yoga and meditation in the British Isles, India and the U.S., and has taught yoga since 1983. Since moving to Mendocino County she has provided services in yoga, massage therapy, and stress reduction in clinical settings as well as for the City of Ukiah, Community Services Department, and Mendocino County Wellness Program. Maggie is Co-Founder, Director & Therapeutics Program Director of Yoga Mendocino, a local non profit based in Ukiah.
Maggie encourages a practice of focussed exploration to allow for the possibilities of expansion and ease of movement in each student. Her strong sense of compassion, warmth, and curiosity infuse her teaching, inviting both a mindful and playful approach to practice. She offers weekly classes in active and adaptive yoga, as well as specialized courses and workshops in back care, stress reduction, balance, and deep relaxation. Customized individual sessions of yoga and/or therapeutic massage are available by appointment. Maggie also leads Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction courses.
Maggie began her yoga student journey in the north of England in 1970 when her Religious Education teacher offered a few yoga classes during the lunch hour to sixth formers (seniors). She continued to pursue this interest at university and while travelling, finally enjoying a regular practice and teachers in London in the mid 1970's. She was certified to teach Iyengar Yoga in 1983 with Lillian Biggs in Yorkshire, England. Maggie has since studied yoga with many influential and remarkable teachers and remains particularly influenced in her practice and teaching by yogis Angela Farmer and Victor van Kooten, as well as the profound teachings of Jan Frazier, Christina Feldman, Ajahn Amaro, and Jon Kabat-Zinn .
